Creative Outpost, Sheffield
The Renovation and re-use of the Grade ll listed Burngreave Cemetery Chapels has been an ongoing project within the Burngreave community since 2000. The lead partners in the project have been Sheffield City Council Bereavement Services and the Friends of Burngreave Chapel & Cemetery, which formed the project development company, Creative Outpost Limited in 2007. The cemetery and its chapel are clearly significant. The site is one of only two cemeteries in Sheffield listed on the Register of Parks and Gardens. The Building listing is Grade ll. The project to refurbish the chapels has always been deeply rooted in providing a new creative industry resource in a very special setting for the Burngreave area.
ci:p were contracted in 2007 to ‘health check’ the development plans and were then appointed to produce a new business plan and building design with Studio Gedye Architecture. Further to this re-evaluation, the resulting project is a dynamic re-use of the existing building to create a new workspace for creative entrepreneurs, producers and small businesses, comprising of arts studio workspace, a base for the local history project, and a new Dance/Theatre Studio for Vincent Dance, who will manage the space as a key dance/theatre resource for the city.
The project is currently going through fundraising phahes.
