Neepsend & Kelham Riverside Development Strategy

Strategic Development Study in support of the Neepsend Forum, an association of local businesses and residents.  Neepsend and Kelham Island is an area close to Sheffield City Centre that is home to a strong and growing cluster of creative and leisure industries, including Yellow Arch Studios, Kelham Island Museum, Sheffield Design Studios, The Foundry Climbing Centre, Sheffield Ski Village and numerous high quality real ale public houses.

However, the area is currently being redeveloped en masse largely due to the range of old industrial buildings and sites on the riverbank.  Residential development is underway on a huge scale, largely unchecked as no policy or strategic guidance exists to advise/guide development.

The Neepsend area is historically vital to the city, and is one of its hidden gems.  ci:p engaged the support and input of students from the School of Architecture at Sheffield University, who worked alongside ci:p and carried out a parallel project study on the area that engaged in some ‘blue skies’ thinking about what could be possible. This work and ci:p’s Strategic Development Study outlined the resident’s hopes and fears for the area, the huge potential that exists for creative, sustainable development, and resulted in the City Council investing in and preparing an Area Action Plan.
