Creative Futures
Project, Wirksworth
Wirksworth Arts & Creative Industries Centre Feasibility & Options Appraisal Study. The objective of this study was to investigate and test the feasibility, viability and sustainability of developing a regionally significant arts and creative industries centre in Wirksworth, which builds on the existing recognised qualities, strengths and achievements of the local creative community. The aim is to provide enhanced facilities and resources which encourage and support local training, production and consumption (including events and tourism); attracts more cultural producers and visitors to the area and further develops and regenerates the cultural, social and economic life of the town and its surrounding area.
This work identified a very large and active creative cluster in the town and surrounding area (abnormally large as a percentage of population). Specific buildings and projects have been identified as part of a long-term phased programme to provide new workspace and artspace, a visual arts gallery, a new performance venue and other production facilities.
ci:p are continuing to work with the client and the town to develop these proposals. Strategically, the Wirksworth project forms a key part of the proposed ‘Derbyshire Creative Industries Development Corridor’, established with Derbyshire County Council.
